Message from Angus: The next coaching session at the Mountbatten for FWCC members is on Sunday 28th April from 10am – 12 noon. There will be at least two coaches so if appropriate we can split groups to meet the needs of all abilities. £2 for juniors and £3 for seniors. All welcome and if anyone has any requests for specific topics please let me know so they can be included rrsec@fareham-wheelers.org.uk

These sessions are for all abilities they build on previous sessions to gain race skills but we can also cater to new members who would like to build their skills and confidence of group riding to help you get more out of club runs. Sadly this will be the last session at the Mountbatten until September due to athletics fixtures.

National Youth Series win for Caitlin Peters!

In what is arguably Caitlin's best ever performance she took the U12G win at Hog Hill in an U12 field of 72 riders. (Riders coming from all over the UK to compete). This was all the more remarkable as she did it after ending up placed at the back of the group at the start. In what turned out to be a 7 lap race of the hilly Hog Hill course in Essex, Supermiss spent the first three laps catching the leading group. She then worked her way to the front and with one lap to go there were only two Girls left at the head of affairs - Caitlin & the talented Elynor Backstedt (Maindy Flyers) from S Wales. Caitlin distanced her rival by the top of the final climb and secured a top ten finish in the overall lead group sprint with the boys - and First U12 Girl. Chapeau Caitlin!

Check out the report from British Cycling here..

British Cycling U12 Girls podium: Caitlin Peters 1st, Elynor Backstedt 2nd and Ellie Smith (Matlock CC) 3rd along with the Mayor of Redbridge and Rob Sharman of the BC team

FWCC are very pleased to announce that 2 members have been newly co-opted onto the club committee. Kim Reading will be primarily responsible for women cyclists (Womens Coordinator) and Levienne Croft will be responsible for social events ( Social Secretary). But the understanding is that they will share the roles.

Kim and Levienne at the start of the regular FWCC Sunday club run at Wickham Community Centre.

This is significant moment in the club's  history as we have never appointed someone specifically to represent the female members of the club. We are very enthusiastic in our support for women in the sport of cycling and we hope that Kim and Levienne will help us fulfil our ambition in this respect.

Roger de Vere

FWCC Secretary

Some brilliant results today at the Ray Martin Memorial 150 Distance League event at the Mountbatten Centre! Another 1, 2 in the U16 race with Harvey grabbing his 2nd win in 3 weeks and Brendan grabbing 2nd place once more, 1st girl in the U12's for Caitlin who only missed out on the U12 overall by a bike length (and throw) from local rider Sam C.  Caitlin then took to the track again immediately in the U16/14 race and snatched first U14 Girl in this too in a sprint finish at the end. This was partly due to some excellent teamwork by Doug Tandy and James Brickell who worked tirelessly mid-race to put Caitlin in the position to go for the girls' win. Nice one Guys!

Vaughan held the U12 lead group right to the end and got 2nd boy, 4th overall.  Tim G suffered his first racing crash, 1 front wheel down but seemed in good spirits and the other riders worked well to keep things under control! Alex C in his 3rd race looking good on his shiny new bike and getting more to grips with racing! FWCC also had Matthew Day in the U12s, Alex Collins in the U16s and the speedy Izzy Brickell (resplendent in her new FWCC racing top) in the U10s. It is great to see our youngsters racing this way and displaying a healthy mix of fitness, tactics and sportsmanship with other riders.....well done everyone!

In the senior 3/4 race we had literally loads of riders! A substantial crash around the halfway point neutralized the race which was later restarted, Mark Balding in his very first race was behind the riders who went down first and narrowly escaped injury, the rest of the wheelers were okay and nobody seemed to be too hurt! I'm not sure if there was a group away at the finish, but Brendan took 6th place after 2nd in the youths!

Henry Newbury raced then in the E123, a good field with a couple of well known riders from teams such as 100%ME, Rapha and team lineups from Felt, Pedal Heaven and Hansfords! A break formed at the start and Henry managed to bridge across where the split gained a half lap or so pretty quickly but then the months of no riding kicked in and he got monumental cramp so had to pull out! Next week should prove better!

A big thanks as ever to Sue and Tim Knight and all involved in the organisation of these events, don't forget you can find news, results and upcoming racing events for the Mountbatten Centre and other races in our area on the Cycling South website

Brendan Drewett entered the 1st of the Herne Hill /VC Londres Open Meets today, riding in all of the U16 events and against known competition from Omniums, Icebreaker & Sprintfest. The events consisted of Scratch race, Devil and Points of which he managed to scoop points on all the sprint laps & 1k TT – where he recorded a time of 1.10.06 putting him as fastest youth and 6th fastest on the day overall including E,1,2,3 & 4 cat riders, topping the youth table for the day and bagging a total of 12 BC points (still to be updated fully on BC site). He then decided to compete in the final event of the day, a 20K race (44 laps) with prime laps on the 24th & 13th remaining lap.

The whistle went for the prime sprint at the 24th lap and at the 2nd bend there was an attack off the front, Brendan’s quick reaction allowed him to progress through the pack by the 3rd bend and catch the front rider by the final straight. Much to his surprise this then led to a neck & neck sprint for the line with Brendan only being beaten into second place after a worthy effort and only half a spoke length in it by Elite rider Jake Martin. At the 2nd prime Brendan was too far off the back to make a decent attack and overall came in 9th out of a field of about 30, a very exciting and nail biting race to watch.

Congratulations to Harvey Morcombe who recorded his first win in the U16 race at the Mountbatten Centre this evening. And what a win it was!.... Harvey, bare legs and all, soloed off the front early into the race and then kept the chasing pack half a lap behind right to the end. Given the arctic conditions and wind this evening, his was a stunning solo effort. Harvey crossed the line for a breathtaking debut win, shortly followed home by FWCCs Brendan in second. This was a large and high quality field containing an Olympic Development Programme rider.
Chapeau Harvey!

Are you ready!!!
In just under 2 weeks time, and assuming it doesn't snow, our evening TT program commences on 4 April with a 10K on the P829 course. As usual it's sign-on the line. Entries will cost just a paltry £4 for over 18s and £2 for under 18s which includes the CTT levy of £2. You can find the full event schedule here:

There are 11 Time Trials and 2 Hill Climbs. However, this year, in each TT event we will be having a race within a race ie there will be an overall winner and a winner on a road bike. Of course you will have to notify us that you're on a road bike at sign-on otherwise we will assume you're on a TT bike. Further, on 13 June we will have a road bikes only event then the overall winner will be on a road bike which means riders on TT bikes will not be classified.

FWCC Annual Dinner and Awards Evening at the Portchester Parish Hall

A great night with the presentation of over 18 awards for achievement of Club TT standards and 22 trophies recognising outstanding performances across the many cycling disciplines from MTB to track. Also 3 Honorary Memberships were awarded to John Ellwood, Bob Blackman and Stan Maidwell who have given many years of service to the club over the years.

Our guest speaker Stephen ‘Sparky’ Park who is the RYA Olympic Manager for Skandia Team GBR and the British Olympic & Paralympic Sailing Team gave an extremely interesting and amusing talk about the Olympic sailing team. As you all know under his management they have won countless medals over recent Olympics. He drew many parallels with cycling in the way the thoroughness in their coaching methods have been a recipe for success. A lively discussion ensued with members of the club in the audience on many aspects of the parallels between Olympic sailing and cycling. He then presented the awards under the direction of Gareth and ably supported by Nigel.

At the end of the evening he was presented with some FWCC memorabilia and membership of the club.

We were very lucky to have an excellent professional photographer on hand in the guise of Graham Robbins to record the event. His photos of the evening can be found here: - http://tinyurl.com/akarb49. Hi-res copies of the photos cost £5 each and are available via Graham’s website.

Thanks to all the other members of the club who helped to make the evening a rip roaring success!

Icebreaker #2 Newport Velodrome

The second of this series of three events took place on Saturday and again the FWCCs riders were Brendan Drewett in the U16B, and Caitlin Peters in the U12G.

Although only 1 degree C outside, it was soon a toasty 26C inside, catching out some of the riders who were overdressed.  There were 4 events today for the riders and at U12 this meant a 12 lap scratch, Elimination race (Devil), 6 lap dash and finally a gruelling 20 lap points race.

After three of the events, a lack of 250m track experience meant that Caitlin needed a strong performance in the final Points race to get on to the Podium.  We needn’t have worried, as watched by her Auntie, Nan and Grandpa from the stands, she ground out an epic win!

This resulted in a third place in the Omnium competition and a Bronze medal.  Caitlin now lies joint second in the series.  (No pressure for the final one in March then!)

The medals were again presented than none other than past Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt, whose daughter Elynor had done enough for the top step despite coming 4th in the points race. Elynor Backstedt is looking the likely U12G overall series winner with one event remaining, well done to her.

The afternoon saw Brendan racing in the oldest Youth category, the U16s.  Again prominent in all of his races, he was lying top 10 (field of 24) with just the 60 lap(!) points race to go.  A crash halted the race – involving up to 6 riders, one of whom was carted off to hospital – luckily not involving our Brendan. The race was then restarted at 34 laps remaining.  We await full publication of the official results but it is likely that Brendan finished top 10 again and now lies c. 5th in the Series.  Well done to both riders, and thanks again to Welsh Cycling for staging such a great event.

Great start to 2013 for FWCC Youth riders!

FWCC pit area

Saturday the 26th of January saw the first big indoor track meeting of 2013, the Icebreaker Youth Omnium event #1, run by Welsh Cycling at the Newport Velodrome. FWCC had Caitlin Peters going in the U12 Girls and Brendan Drewett in the U16 Boys. These are great events because the U12Gs race separately - well done Welsh Cycling on their equality policy - BC HQ take note! Caitlin was nervous as she hadn't ridden a 250m indoor track before and the standard of rider was going to be as high as it gets in the UK. A very early start meant we were there in plenty of time and warm up proceeded well. Then, just as the rider briefing was due to start prior to the first race, the whole Velodrome was evacuated due to a serious gas leak in the boiler room! Riders grabbed a warm layer and rollers were left spinning, as we all had to walk 1/2 mile to a nearby swimming pool to await developments. Fortunately we only lost an hour and after the walk back and 2nd warm up it was race on! The meeting consisted of a 12 lap scratch race, Elimination race (Devil) and a 20 lap Points race making up the overall omnium result. Caitlin later confessed that she was actually shaking on the start line in her first race but luckily her dad didn't know this as he was nervous enough himself! (A great piece of advice from Donohue Snr last year about using nerves to your advantage helped Caitlin - thanks Ian!). The main opposition it turned out came from two Maindy Flyers who rather worked Caitlin and the field over in the first race, and SuperMiss narrowly missed third place by a wheel. However this was all she needed to get familiar with the track, its size, and angles and in the remaining two events it was a real 'nailbiter' between Caitlin and Elynor Backstedt (yep that's right, Magnus' daughter) for first and second place. Newport is Elynor's home track and she edged Caitlin for first place in both the Elimination and Points by a bike length. This meant that the Overall had Elynor (Maindy Flyers) in first place but Caitlin had got an excellent 2nd place. The presentation then took place with Magnus Backstedt himself giving out the medals etc. Caitlin was thrilled to bits to get on the podium and even more so to have some proper female opposition at last! Roll on Event 2 at the end of Feb...... Then, later in the day, Brendan used his silky smooth pedalling skills to be in contention in his three races, often appearing at the head of affairs although a slightly 'questionable' Devil result called him off the track earlier than he might have been. We await full results publication, but Brendan achieved 7th place overall we think (Field of 24) and lets not forget the strength of the opposition at this meeting. Our riders acquited themselves brilliantly, and thanks go to Welsh Cycling, Newport Velodrome and their massive team of volunteer helpers who made it a really great day.

A message for Youth and Junior riders from Dr Chester Hill:

On Tuesday evening 29th January Fareham Wheelers will have it's first youth and junior meeting of 2013 as part of the regular Tuesday evening club meeting at Catisfield Hall. Youth and junior members please come along, so we can we can all get to know everyone and more importantly get a flavour of what our younger members want from FWCC over the course of 2013. The main topic will be looking over the 2013 calendar. Hopefully this will give riders an idea of what regional and national competitions are available to them, and start to inspire riders accordingly. And hopefully, if we all turn up, see who else wants to race the same events. From this we can start to think about frequency and types of coaching sessions to complement riders' ambitions, including club nominations for Regional Schools of Racing and the like. I hope this will also be an opportunity for the more established youth and junior riders to help newer members move forward in the sport and to create more of a team spirit.

Furthermore...

We have the club room booked from 7pm, so I have suggested that we have a informal roller session beforehand. The focus will be on teaching riders, new to rollers. how to ride, and give more experienced riders an opportunity to increase their repertoire of roller tricks. The GB talent development coaches put a lot of emphasis on good bike handling skills and roller riding, so it will be important that riders get to grips with rollers. We are hopeful to get several pairs of rollers to the club house  so everyone can have go!
See you all there - Tuesday 29th Jan - 7pm to 9pm at Catisfield Memorial Hall.
