Race Report U12s Portsmouth Circuits at the Mountbatten

Cool, dry, breezy and the usual exciting finish in Portsmouth this evening! FWCC had Vaughan ‘where’s my Bibshorts’ Marris and Caitlin P. The field numbered ten or so including two girls. It was the usual dogfight at the front with Sam (i-team) repeatedly trying to get away only to be brought back by Caitlin and/or Vaughan. These three made up the lead group. Vaughan, FWCCs latest recruit to the U12s is getting stronger with every race and indeed was pulling on the front several times. The leaders distanced the rest of the field by some way and on two occasions even passed the other two older girls, racing in the U14/U16 youth category, who were riding around as a pair. The 2 to go board was shown and it was heads down and up the pace. Caitlin managed to hang on to Sam right round the last lap and they came off the last bend together, Sam just getting over the line c.2 bike lengths clear. Vaughan followed to get another 3rd overall and second boy. Caitlin got 2nd overall and first girl. So a good night for us and excellent to see two FWCC jerseys in the sprint finish.

Btw: The author would encourage all parents (or riders) in the other age categories to submit a line saying how their race went; it’s simply not possible to watch all competitors given there’s c.40 riders on the track at the same time. Send anything in to the webmaster. Brendan Drewett and Joe Donohue were also racing for us this evening in the U16s & Matthew Day in the U10s.

Andover Wheelers Platform Lift Co.

Thruxton Summer Warm-Up Circuits#2

The second and last of these Monday nighters saw a much smaller Youth field than the first……Maybe they’re all revising for GCSEs or doing their homework?.....or maybe it was the towering cumulo-nimbus clouds and the gale that was blowing down the hill to the chicane……

FWCC had Joe Donohue going in the U16s and Caitlin P in the U12s. The distances were 4 and 3 laps respectively. Joe looked the strongest throughout and rode away from his main competitor from Andover Whs with a lap to go. He then solo-ed in for the win for whole last lap, lapping the U12s field of two (!) in the process. Caitlin lost out in the sprint by a bike length to a resurgent Alex Hall from Andover Whs. At several points these two hardy souls could be seen to be going at virtual walking pace into the wind as it was that strong. Well done to all riders and thanks again to Andover Whs and the commissaires.

NB Joe D obviously felt that winning the four lap youth race was just his warm-up, and then immediately took to the start line in the 3rd/4th Cat race! What are you feeding him, Ian?

Andover Wheelers Platform Lift Co. Summer Warm-Up Circuits

FWCC had two youths racing at Thruxton this evening. The evening arrived and although there was plenty of cloud around, it was warmish (c.15 degrees), and completely dry for the whole race. Caitlin in the U12s and Brendan in the U16s. Race distances were set at 3 and 7 laps respectively….

The U16s went off first and Brendan could soon be seen prominently at the front of the bunch in the first couple of times through the chicane. The U12 field then went off, numbering 7, with Caitlin as the only girl. There were some strong riders present from, including amongst others, St. Raphael and Herne Hill……..Sam Clark (i-team) drifted off the front early in the race but was soon brought back by the capable bunch (over half the field were 2nd Yr U12s.) The lead group of five got the bell and the next time they appeared way out the back of the track of was a ‘Mountbatten’ 1-2 with Sam and Caitlin off the front about 50m clear of the others!! Supporters were hopeful that they could stay away but the nature of the finish line at Thruxton means you can’t see that, and the final chicane. So with two very expectant Dads then waiting near the line the only question was who would appear first………… Caitlin then appeared, on her own, giving it everything!.......Supermiss had dropped Sam in the chicane and duly drove hard to get the Overall victory - 1st U12 rider (and first Girl of course, there being only one!!) Sam got a super solo second. The spectators duly applauding a fine female win!

NB. In the post race chat it transpired that John D (Team Brendan) had given some timely and well placed encouragement to Caitlin in the final chicane to go-for-it all the way to the line. Whatever he shouted did the trick and a very pleased Caitlin returned to the pits….(This is a great result given Caitlin is only a 1st Yr U12 remember)

Brendan meanwhile rode strongly all race and got a 5th overall. An excellent result made even better by the fact that all in front of him were 2nd Yr U16s. The race was won by a storming ride by Tom Saunders another Mountbatten-based rider (i-team). Well done to all who rode and thanks also to Andover Wheelers and the Commissaires team who put on a smashing evening race.

The weather put off many would be riders on a dismal evening in our 15 mile TT on the P823 course... Race report and results here..

Ray Martin #5

A great night for FWCC Youth riders in Portsmouth! A dark and overcast evening provided the meteorological backdrop this evening as the riders took to the start line at the Mountbatten centre. First off was Matthew Day in the U10s. He rode strongly for the whole race and although pushed hard throughout by a charging Poppy Pattinson from Oakwood Racers, was able to sprint for the win. Well done Matt, more wins than your Dad’s got this season!

Then it was the turn of the U12s. The field numbered 9 this week and FWCC had Caitlin, and the fast improving Vaughan, fighting for the remaining points. The race settled into what has become the regular pattern….lead group forms during the first lap consisting of Bethany, Caitlin, Sam and Vaughan. These four stayed away for half the race and then due to overly cagey tactics were rejoined by 4 others. The pace then rose again with the attacks from first Sam and then Bethany. The Commissaires were clamping down hard on U16 assistance this week and when support from a Palmer Park U16 girl arrived again it was quickly warned off….The leading group of 4 was re-established and in due course the ‘2 to go’ board was shown and pace quickened. Caitlin got 3rd overall, just lost out to Bethany in the sprint for first girl, with Sam Clark taking the overall. (SuperMiss then ‘fessed up that she’d been doing triathlon training at school that afternoon – strewth!) Vaughan got another excellent 4th overall and 2nd boy. We await publication of the official results but Caitlin should have done enough to secure 1st U12 girl for the Ray Martin Series 2012. She looked rather pleased with herself as she was soon tucking into some MBC chips! A great introduction to series racing too for Vaughan. The picture shows Vaughan, Sam Clark (series winner), and Caitlin on their warm-down lap……..

In the U16’s we had Joe Donohue (tuning up for the Isle-of-Man Youth Tour!) and Brendan Drewett. This is a fiercely competitive category and Joe secured and excellent 3rd place. Although not often featuring in the top three, Brendan is an ever-present feature of these races and regularly and confidently rides with the lead group. Tonight he got a good 6th place. As one observer has been heard to say (at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre actually…) “That boy has a very elegant & fluid riding style, reminiscent of a young Coppi” !

Btw: our thoughts go to FWCC’s Ant Grabham who will be experiencing a very painful couple of days and nights due to the massive road rash he sustained in the 3rd and 4th cat race crash at the sprint for the line…..rest easy mate. Wasn’t his fault but skidded flat out for 3-4 metres…….ouch!

Finally, two further snippets: There was only one World Champion & World Record Holder racing at the track tonight! (nice one Dani) and Caitlin only gave one interview to Meridian South TV!!!!!

Ray Martin #4 U12s Race report

The fourth in the Rain Mainly, sorry Ray Martin, Series took place tonight and given the wet weather earlier in the day – amazingly - took place on a dry track. FWCC had Caitlin and Vaughan taking the start line in the U12s field. The wind was the problem tonight with the riders slowing considerably in the back straight entry to the final corner. The lead group formed immediately from the first half lap and contained Caitlin, Bethany (Palmer Park RT) and Sam (i-team). The pace remained higher than last week and Caitlin tried several speculative bursts to distance the others. Each time the group reformed. The fact that the U16 and U14 riders are on the track at the same time then played a part because with 3 laps to go Bethany’s older sister (an U16) dropped into the line and dragged Bethany (and Sam) away. Caitlin was caught napping, couldn’t stay on and the gap was never regained.. It was great teamwork from Palmer Park (FWCC Take note!)

Vaughan meanwhile rode strongly again for the whole race and made sure of an excellent fourth place overall, and second boy.

So the finishing order was Sam, Bethany and Caitlin.

All good experience, and a lesson learned for Caitlin! Ray Martin 2012 Finale next Wednesday.

Evening 9.2 ish mile club TT

The first problem we had was the road works on the Southwick road which meant we had to shorten the course to about 9.2ish miles.

The second problem we had was when we were readying for sign on at about 6 o’clock the heavens opened leaving the event in question...full report and results here..

Archer RC Spring Criterium

The showers held off at Hillingdon for all the youth category races this afternoon. FWCC were represented by Caitlin Peters in the U12s and Joe Donohue in the U16s. (Other local interest was supplied by ‘Mountbatten Crew’ members of the i-team, namely Sam and Joe Clark U12 & U14, and Jamie Hutchinson U14.)

The U10/U12s raced together and the field numbered 27 or so riders including about 7 girls. There was a crash immediately from the start when a young rider clipped pedals and ‘corkscrewed’ out of the group ending up on the finish line tarmac area. Plenty of grazing but he did rejoin the race! The lead group formed around the first bend, numbering about a dozen, and by the first ascent of Hillingdon’s little climb Caitlin was the only girl still there. This was the pattern of the race with Caitlin showing strongly at each pass through the finish area and especially up the climb. One or two were whittled away from the lead group and then the ‘2 to go’ board was shown…. The riders began jostling for position ready for the last lap. Caitlin was still in the lead group up the short climb for the last time and when the leaders came into sight in the finishing straight Supermiss then gave it everything she had. It was quite a sprint for the line and Caitlin finished middle of the well strung out bunch, and first Girl. She was rather pleased with herself as this is a higher age category than last year and many of the boys riding are 2nd year U12s. Sam finished well too. Next up were the U14s/U16s racing together. In the U16 category a very strong looking Joe Donohue featured very prominently at the front of the race and could be seen 30 yds off the front solo with around 3 laps to go. As the speed inevitably quickened the bunch reformed and then there was a very fast sprint to the line. Joe D got c10th place with Jamie Hutchinson U14 getting c. 12th overall. Joe Clark time-trialled around in a group of three, which contained the U12 Girls National Champion of 2011, so strong company. All finished safely and returned to the club house for a well earned cake and drink. Caitlin was presented with the prize for 1st Girl U12 – equality reigning here at Hillingdon with prizes awarded for 1st Girl and Boy only, in each category. Thanks as ever to the organisers and Commissaires; Hillingdon is such a great venue for Youth racing.

Ray Martin #3 - Race Report U12s:

The current spell of foul weather again featured prominently in this Wednesday’s evening races at the Mountbatten Centre. FWCC were represented by Caitlin Peters and Vaughan Marris in this small but very competitive field of 6 riders. It was raining heavily all afternoon and the track was completely soaking as the riders lined up on the rail. In fact the rain was strong enough at the start to cause Caitlin to ride with her arms covered – almost unheard of! Again, U12s/14s & 16s were on the track at the same time. The race was a cagey affair with both Caitlin and Sam (i-team) keeping their powder dry due to the presence of a new rider from Poole Wheelers…….There were some speculative increases in pace which distanced some of the weaker riders but then the leaders kept sitting up…..much to the frustration of the trackside Director Sportifs! This enabled the group to assemble as one again – must have happened half a dozen times. A big well done needs to go to Vaughan this week who was looking stronger and he stayed with the lead group the whole time….The ‘2 to go’ board was shown and the pace quickened. With one to go it was still Gruppo Compacto for the leaders…..Sam opened up with his usual do or die Sprint from the 200m line and gradually pulled away. In the run in Caitlin got third overall (and first girl of course, there being only one tonight!). Vaughan got a great 4th overall which means third boy and hence should get 1 BC ranking point – his first one. You always remember your first one Vaughan – 1 more than your Dad’s gonna get this year too.

The racers cooled down and when leaving the track looked absolutely bedraggled and sopping wet. Caitlin commented through a scowl “I’ve been eating bits of grit all race…” So, three down two to go in the RM series. We await publication of the official results but the series U12s standings should show Sam and Caitlin virtually on the same points.

Ray Martin #2 – 11th April – Race Report U12s:

Another large field assembled at the MBC for the second event of the series. Although dry in the afternoon, some very ominous dark clouds were massing over towards the Fareham area and heading our way…..The weather did indeed have the last laugh in the Youth race……

This event saw the racing debut of the next in line of the Marris cycling dynasty…..Vaughn going in the U12s resplendent in his new FWCC racing top.

The U12s U14s and U16s again raced at the same time and the break formed from the first corner, this week consisting of Bethany, Sam and Caitlin. These three stayed away for the whole racing lapping the rest of the U12s field and quite a few of the slower U14s too. Marris Jnr road strongly all the way through and finished a creditable mid field position. Nice one Vaughn, great to see the FWCC colours flying on another U12.

The weather now played it’s part with drops of raining soon turning into a steady shower, then full-on downpour followed with hail mixed in and then the full Biblical deluge!!! The youngsters stuck at it though and Caitlin could be seen frantically wiping rain off her glasses so she could see ahead. The final lap saw the speed of the lead group increasing and although there was no repeat of last week’s crash, the finish was no less exciting: Sam (i-team) buried himself at the 200m line and gradually pulled away from the two girls. Bethany was on the front coming round the final turn and then Caitlin opened with a well-timed Cavtastic sprint to come around Bethany and cross the line about half a bike length in front. So; another second overall, and first girl! Well done to all who finished this race as the weather conditions were frankly appalling at the end.

Not forgetting our Olivia Cross who raced for FWCC in the U10s and U8s and looked great all he way through on her shiny new Raleigh. Well done Olivia!

FWCC Club TT Thursday 5 April Course: P829/10K
Report from Roger:

Evening much colder than a week ago when it was pushing 20, now its just 7 with a keen easterly wind. We had 40 sign-on with 39 actually starting. Poor Rob Painter had a chain snap whilst making his way towards the exit of the car park so didn't start- hard luck Rob. Our quasi antipodean pusher off (Mark F) was feeling a little cold as he is more used to +30. So the first man off was Alan Davy at 18:31. There were 26 wheelers in the field, a great showing by club members. Alan was also 1st man home at about 18:50. As this is such a short TT timekeeping is problematic with many riders coming home in clusters so a number caller (Robin) at the finish was essential. All riders were home within the hour. The overall winner was Dave Dalton(FWCC) with a 14:47, followed by Gary Ferrett (HRC) with 15:12 and 3rd place went to Chris Fletcher (Team Axiom). The best under 18 was Joe Donohue with 15:47. Best Lady was Debbie Hallett (Ports Tri) with 18:22.
My thanks to the following: John and Joan Ellwood for sign-on and results board ably assisted by Henry. Mark Farr for pushing off and Don for starting the field and Tony Wilcock for marshalling the turn at Southwick and for retrieving the signs for me.
I think that about covers it. Don't forget our next TT is on 19th April.

Full results are here..

Ray Martin #1 - 4th April - Race report U12s:

A sunny night and the school holidays brought a massive field down to the Mountbatten Centre for the first of the five event Ray Martin Series. The U8s & 10s raced together first and then the U12s/U14s/U16s were all racing on the track at the same time. There must’ve been nearly 40 of the bigger riders, and this was to play a part in the finish!.

Caitlin was up against some stiff opposition in the form of Sam from the I-Team (Getting a sense of déjà vu?), Bethany from Palmer Park Velo and Kareem from Herne Hill, along with the rest of the dozen or so field. The lead group formed immediately consisting of the four named above. Sam tried several times to distance himself with swooping bursts using the bend slopes for extra speed but was brought back each time by the others. The ‘2 laps to go’ was given and Kareem tried to string it out. Observers could see that there was going to be an ‘interesting finish’ as it was likely that the U16 leaders would just overtake the U12s at the finish line. This is exactly what happened, but not without incident…. With 40yds to go the order was Kareem, Caitlin, Bethany and Sam when an U16 rider cut in and clipped Kareem and sent him sprawling to the tarmac, actually crashing over the line. Caitlin was directly behind him and couldn’t avoid ploughing straight into him. Caitlin was flung on to the grass and by some sort of miracle sustained nothing more than slight grazing/bruising and grass stained kit. Graham Robins the photographer was forced to jump out of the way of the flying Caitlin…..Amazingly, her bike was undamaged too. Kareem was not so lucky and suffered some nasty road rash, fortunately nothing broken. Because of the position of the U16s finish. the U12s order was as it was crossing the line. So a second overall, and first girl, for FWCC.

This was Supermiss’ first racing crash. She was a bit shaky for a while but normal service was resumed shortly after when she was buzzing around on her BMX bike!!, and eager to race RM#2. (A very relieved Dad was counting his blessings, btw…….)

Randonnee report from Dave D:

'A few hardy riders braved the conditions to do the randonnee this morning.
I think only 5 of us made it all the way round. There was quite a bit of slushy snow on Old Winchester Hill leading to some slippery conditions so a few turned back (probably the sensible ones!). We tiptoed along the top to Mercury wondering what we would do if the road was snowy on the steep descent to East Meon. Fortunately that was clear and we could get a bit of speed up again. A few more turned off at East Meon to head back via West Meon and the A32. After that the roads were generally ok although a bit of slush meant coming down from the top of Harting had to be taken carefully. Going uphill was almost better than down as at least you could warm up - a bit! Thanks to Bob for organising things and providing a very welcome hot cup of tea and cakes at the finish.'
