Phil and Neil rode in the cat 3/4 Dave Ryan memorial road race this morning, everyone else was far too sensible to trek all the way up to Oxford to ride around in a downpour. From Neil's point of view at least he wasn't out in it long, crashing while going down a hill on the first lap! Neil says "I went cartwheeling so far through a hedge that the paramedic/support cars behind didn't see me and drove straight past! I think I've broken a finger but otherwise I'm just cut to ribbons. Gave the nice ladies at race HQ quite a shock! (Note: the bike is fine so no real damage done!) Phil on the other hand was going great guns, the lack of cooperation in the bunch when it came to break-chasing was frustrating as most guys seemed to want to sit in and wait for the finale: A leg snapping climb that turned off the main loop for the last 400m. It was very steep and a real power finish, Phil rode well saving a bit for the final lunge and finished up around 15th (5 riders clear by 20sec or so, then a procession of 4-5 leading the main body of the bunch home). Great prep' for next weekends Sotonia race was the conclusion in the car home (provided my finger is better!)" Better luck next week Neil! Results are here but Phil seems to be missed off at the moment...

28/06/2008

Robin Didymus and Gareth Peters rode in the Team AXIOM Mid-Summer Hill Climb at Ditcham Park School. 2pm start, today. A great new event for the calendar – fantastic venue, excellent organisation and a lovely 2.2 miles of suffering!! (The North hill up to the school is used…..a mix of flat bits, steep bits, very steep hairpin bit and a nice 90 degree turn within 100m of the finish line thrown in at the end!....) Robin placed second (go Robin!) with a time of 8:04, and Gareth managed 9:29. The Winner was the promoting team’s Luke Myers with a 7:30. (He was also fastest to the gatekeeper’s Lodge Prime) There were lots of junior riders taking part and many were presented with prizes from the bottom of the finishing list upwards. Big thanks to Tony, Luke, Sarah and the Axiom for a superb afternoon’s competition! and to Will and his team at Ditcham. This is hopefully going to become an annual event and it would be great to see more FWCC riders supporting next year.

The next two Thursday evening club TT events are for club trophies:

3rd July: 25 mile Hodges Handicap Cup; 17th July: 10 mile Jean Gray Handicap Cup. As club handicapper it would be helpful to Don if those intending to ride could enter in advance. This is to minimise the possibility of overlooking riders who turn up ad lib. The old crystal ball is less reliable than the form book ! ! For those uninitiated with the handicap procedures, it is based on the competitor's form. Having established the fastest man (known as the Scratchman) a time allowance is given to all other riders set against the 'scratchman' depending on their ability. In theory, the most improved rider wins. Let Don know if you intend to ride...

25/06/2008

Dave Dalton and Phil Burton represented FWCC in the 3/4 CAT race at the DHCycles Mountbatten circuits. The strong windy conditions affected the 35 strong race significantly. Much of the race was spent lined out in single file which quickly broke up into a number of small groups, as clinging to the wheel in front became a survival exercise. Phil said it was "One of the hardest I have done and the average speed was over 1 mph slower than the usual. It was good to see a number of Wheelers in the crowd supporting, much appreciated." Dave finished in the group and Phil was rewarded with 3rd for giving it a go early on. - Racking up the points now Phil!  Full Results at BC site when posted.

News from Susan Knight's Susie's Circuits at Thruxton: Dave and Gavin rode well and finished safely in the bunch in a fast sprint in the 4th cat race. Both remarked on the good experience they are gaining from the frequent races. Phil rode a steady, disciplined race (or in his words - "sat in") in the 3rd cat race and gave it a go on the last drag up to the chicane riding home into 3rd place for his second excellent result of the weekend. Club Record Broken!!!

At Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 10 mile open TT on the P613, Phil Burton, Geoff Loveman and James Terry all rode personal best times today to break the FWCC record with a team time of 1:02:58. James rode a blistering 21:34, smashing his previous best time by 70 seconds, Geoff knocked 48 seconds off his p.b. with a thundering 20:55 and Phil sheared 62 seconds off his time from ten days ago with an explosive 20:29!!!

The record for a team ten mile TT was previously set in 1994 by Rowan Horner, Russ Lloyd and Ashley Morris, with a combined team time of 1:03:25. After today's ride the team spoke seriously about their achievement: "Yessss! Come on!! Yeeehaaarrrr!!! We love it!!!! Go Team!!!!!" Results here, also, you can check FWCC club records over the years here but right now I'm going to get the beers in.

Lloyd Coward Memorial RR - After Saturday's races Dave and Phil were joined by Neil and Andy for today's 45 mile race on the very fast Monkey World course. Numerous attempted breaks got closed out until a lap and a half to go when 5 got away and looked strong. The FWCC team worked well with Andy trying a solo bridge, unfortunately this did not work out. So then it was 5 or so miles of wringing the handle bars and lining out the peleton to close the break down. It was all together for the last drag up to the finish. The FWCC team attacked a number of times with Neil going 2.5 Km out and looking strong at first only to fade, then Phil attacked a little too early with just over 1 Km left but it forced the sprint to start and Andy took a great 4th place. A very pleasing result for the team as with half a lap left 6th looked the best possible result but the good teamwork paid off. Dave was chuffed to stay with the bunch and finish his first road race proper - no mean feat as it was burning hot and with a high average pace of nearly 27 mph. Results here..

07/06/2008

South Circuit League - Mountbatten Centre - FWCC had 3 riders in the 4th Cat race . Gavin, Dave and Simon all used their experience from the midweek races well to sit in and then work hard at the right times. Dave did some good pulls off the front to close down attacks and Gavin got a great finish - we'll be checking the results when they're up to see if he was in the points ('fraid not - 13th - unlucky Gavin). Simon and Dave finished well in the bunch. Phil rode the 3rd Cat race and had a good active race and attacked solo with just under 2 laps to go. It was not quite enough for the win as a Bournemouth Arrow rider got across but Phil was happy with 2nd place and his first points of the season. Results here..

Dave Dalton, Simon Weeks, Andy Page and Phil Burton rode in the Mountbatten Portsmouth-DHCyclesport cat 3/4 circuit race yesterday evening. Andy and Phil made numerous attempts to get away but with no luck - the race stuck together until the final 3 lap mad dash !! One rider got a good gap and the rest sprinted it out. Unfortunately, after looking strong early on, Dave  touched wheels and crashed. He has a few scrapes and bruises but hopefully nothing to stop him racing again next week! Simon found the pace hard but is pleased to be seeing the reward of  hanging in there longer and longer each week.

Rob Didymus rode in the elite/1/2/3 race -looking strong and doing a lot of hard work pulling the group across to the break and placing 10th. Results here..

10/05/2008

Phil Burton, Geoff Loveman, Neil Dayus, Andy Page and James Terry rode in the Team Axiom promoted Roy Ludford Memorial - Tour of The Milburys. After the blitz up Old Winchester Hill in the morning's first stage TT, the road stage was hard, it was hot and it was long. Neil was unfortunate to puncture on a day when he was looking strong - thanks for passing up the drinks Neil! James and Andy packed  after several tough laps - no shame there on a day when only half the original field actually finished. Geoff was dropped on the penultimate climb up Beacon Hill Lane - losing the 16th place he managed on the first stage (story of my life - still you might as well carry on when there's only one lap to go) while Phil proved the strongest Fareham rider on the day - only losing contact with the bunch as the race fell to pieces in the final assault. The final results are here..

Thanks to Team Axiom and all the marshals, drivers etc. for such a great event.

Great results for FWCC at the Thruxton South Circuit League,  despite the weather....more..

11/03/2008

FWCC entries for the PTTL TT on 30th March should be with Roger de Vere by Monday 17th March at the latest. Roger will need the £2.50 entrance fee before he can forward the entry. Roger will be at the club on Monday. Only riders who enter via Roger will qualify for league points. Others can enter on the line at the organiser’s (PNE) discretion but will not qualify for league points.

09/03/2008

FWCC had 4 riders at the Thruxton Omega Circuits today. Usual conditions, showers and head-wind up the hill. Peter Day and Andy Page rode in the 4th cat race. We think Pete may have got a place in the top 10 though official results aren't in yet; Andy did lots of attacking off the front. Robin Didymus and Phil Burton rode the 3rd cat race, results have to be checked by video as it ended in a bunch sprint of about 30 to 40 riders. Both our boys had got into moves off the front during the race so it was not a wasted outing. Unfortunately, Phil got brought down in the sprint with 5 or 6 other riders. Phil says: "Not too much to write home about, just glad I used the training bike, some of the carbon ones were in a bit of a sorry state." - Take it easy Phil - hope you're not too bruised.

Update - Robin placed 4th in the cat 3 event - results here..

Entries for the final PTTL event must be in by Wednesday 13th Sept - so get your entry in to Don - tomorrow club night might be a good time to remember this! Due to the continued roadwork on the B2177 (Wickham - Southwick) it will be a shorter version of the intended course. Probably about 5 miles ! ! Starting at Trampers Lane North Boarhunt.; and a gut busting ride up Portsdown Hill and back.  It clashes with the 'South Down Challenge'  but you might be able to do both if you get an early start on the TT!

Dave Rich and Phil Burton rode in the www.Agiskoviner.com 10 mile  Open TT today on the H10/8 Bentley course. Phil managed to plateau with exactly the same time as 2 weeks ago (22:27) good enough for 15th. No team award this week - oh well!

27/08/2007

Angus Fileman and Geoff Loveman rode in the a3crg 50 mile open TT on the P885. Geoff rode a p.b. of 1:54:31, Angus rode a 2:39:20.  Angus says, "For the record I did puncture @ about 35 miles. Until then I was more or less on target for my vets standard time of 2:21. As it was I changed my tube and cruised to the finish." Bad luck Angus and well done for finishing after that! Phil, Larry and Geoff rode in the last of the Velocity Mountbatten circuit events of 2007. Having almost enough points for cat 2, Larry and Phil weren't aiming to get any more points as they don't want to miss out on the great local cat 3 races next year, so they worked hard to chase down all the breaks doing a great job of controlling the race. Geoff went in a break towards the end of the race but it didn't work out. In the sprint Geoff went for it too early and was going backwards by the end, rolling in with Phil. Larry placed 7th despite his best efforts not to score any points! As it was the final event, Rich Pearman of Velocity presented prizes for the final league standings, courtesy of Velocity bikes. Phil placed 4th in the league and Larry placed 7th - great results for FWCC!

Phil and Neil raced in the 2-3-4cat Sotonia 40th anniversary road race today.  52 miles of the Owslebury course under humid conditions with a healthy 60+ turnout.  Phil had a go early on, bridging across to a fledgling escape group only to be foiled by a lack of cooperation in the group and they were swallowed up.  Both Neil and Phil spent the majority of the race keeping pace in the peloton whilst the break of the day went away with four laps to go.  Neil unshipped his chain at the base of the climb on the penultimate lap, chased back on but couldn't match the acceleration over the top of the hill and drifted off the back.  Phil rode smart and tried to select a good position (5th wheel) for the bunch sprint - a very impressive sight; he finished strongly through heavy traffic for 13th spot.  This was a great race and will be one to watch out for next year on the super selective Owslebury Circuit, a real treat! Results here..

12/07/2007

Steve Wilkinson placed 4th in the 2007 Great Divide Mountain Bike Race - A Trans-America ultra-race from border to border of 2,490 miles, solo and self-supported. Read all about his exploits here..

02/07/2007

Dave's mtb rides for July are now up on the mtb section..

01/07/2007

Phil Burton represented FWCC in the 3/4 Cat Dave Ryan Memorial Road Race on the Beckley course near Oxford. An 80+ field competed over the 4 x 22.5 Km laps that consisted of a large flat section and three climbs of between 4 - 10%. The good weather and course made for a fast and exciting race. A break of 5 got away on lap 3, Phil and other riders found it difficult to close down as team mates of those in the break did a good job of hindering the chase. The break managed to stay away to the finish by 15 - 20 secs. The finish was on at the top of a 8% climb and although Phil felt he had good legs, poor positioning in the large bunch prevented a higher place. Results are on the BC website..

24/06/2007

Roadwork's on the B2177 Wickham - Southwick Road, will undoubtedly affect the next two 25 mile events. A decision has been taken to run both, but as a shorter version of the course. As things stand  at the moment  we will leaving out the whole of the B2177 section and finish each in Rookesbury Farm Gateway approx 500 yds south of the  ' Roebuck ' Pub. This would give a distance of approx 20.6 miles.  (car measurement). Next Thursday's event  5th July is for the Hodges Handicap Cup, which we still hope to run. It would help Don if members entered in advance so that he can figure out what their handicap time should be more accurately. The second event affected is the PTTL event on Sunday 15th July, this closes next week - Don is looking for riders and helpers!

23/06/2007

Another windy day (but no rain) at Bentley saw 2 wheelers on the start sheet for the Farnham RC open 25 on the H25/8. Dave Rich did a new pb of 59:42 and Matt Warlow did a 1:00:55. Well done guys!
22/06/2007

The roadworks that forced shortening last night's TT are connected with laying new water pipes along the length of the road - this appears to be long term so we may not be able to use the course again this year. We may be using the P813 (Travellers Rest/Hipley) or the P817 so check here or at the club before heading out to the next P829 event.

21/06/2007

Roy Bailey rode a 23:07 in the Bognor Regis CC 10 mile open TT on the P901 - you can check the full results here..

Phil Burton of FWCC won this evening's club 9 mile TT  - nice one Phil - correct me if I'm wrong but I reckon this course hasn't been used before so that makes Phil's time the course record for the P829c/9. May it stand forever! Results are now posted here..

20/06/2007

Phil, Rik, Larry and Geoff rode in the Mountbatten circuits cat 3/4 race this evening. The guys were all active at the front of the race from the start, trying to get in a break. After a couple of attempts a break that looked like it had a chance of staying away formed up with Larry getting in there. The other FWCC boys stayed up at the front to slow the chase and the tactic worked - the break lapped the bunch and Larry placed fourth in the sprint - more points for Fareham in the South region table! Full results here..

18/06/2007

Just a reminder that next Monday (25th) is Tour de France quiz night - see the social events page for more info..

Roy Bailey rode a 59-59 at the Bognor Regis CC Dennis Doughty club 25 on the P901 at Fontwell today. Roy says "I have not been under [the hour] for 5 years, due to an injury so its very good to be under again, and the first time for the club. Had a bit of a ding dong with Peter Younghusband - I was his minute man and I was caught on the long leg between Arundel and Fontwell - it took him 4 attempts to get past totally, after Tangmere and then by a 14 s difference at the finish. He said he was a bit tired after riding a tt and a 9 mile run the previous evening! But that's Triathletes for you." Nice one Roy - great ride! You can download the full results here [29kb]

13/06/20007

Wet conditions for Rik and Geoff who rode in tonight's cat 3/4 Velocity bikes circuit race at the Mountbatten centre. PNECC P822 35Km TT. The event was won by Ray Robinson (Velocity) with a 51.12, 2nd Eamon Watson (Velocity) 53.15 and FWCC Phil Burton was 3rd with a 54.42. This is a good hard test not used by our club but it will be in the PTTL this year on 12 August.

30/05/2007

Larry and Phil rode the Velocity circuits at Mountbatten. The FWCC riders worked extremely hard on a blustery night to bring back a dangerous early break. At half way 2 riders got away and Phil had to bridge to get a Fareham presence at the front. The three riders managed to stay away and Phil got a pleasing 3rd spot. Larry blocked well and was rewarded with a good 2nd in the bunch sprint and 5th overall. A good points haul for FWCC on the night. Riders are reminded there is no racing at Mountbatten next week (6/6/07).

24/05/2007

Ray Robinson of Velocity won this evening's 10 with a time of 22.42 - full results are here..

23/05/2007

Larry and Luke rode the Mountbatten tonight. Larry got in a break which worked really well and lapped the field which ensured a good result he managed 6th and the valuable points needed to get up to 3rd Cat. Luke rode steadily for
