FWCC Off-Road Night Riding FAQ’s

Q    Do I need special and expensive lights?

A    You’ll need a light that throws a good beam to light the trail ahead. These start at about £80. You’ll want a burn time of three hours minimum, as all of the rides will be over two hours, and there may be delays for punctures, etc. Buy the best you can afford. You’ll consider it money well spent after discovering the new world it opens up and all the extra riding it allows you to do.

Q    Can you recommend a good light?

A    Anything by Exposure Lights (USE) or Hope will do nicely. Both brands are British made and great performers - with good back up, availability and service. I especially like Exposure’s range.

Q    Are these rides suitable for beginners?

A    Distances will be significant, and riding in the dark requires extra concentration. These rides are suited to off-road cyclists with the necessary fitness. ‘Pace of the slowest’ dictates the speed.

Q    Will I need a rear light?

A    Yes, definitely. And, it must be set to ‘constant’ - so as not to hypnotise following riders! Nothing fancy is needed at the back. A small, basic LED light should be plenty.

Q    Is it a good idea to have a ‘backup’ front light?

A    Yes, a cheap (£1 to £10) LED head-torch, mounted on the helmet, is useful if your main light is bar-mounted - in case of punctures. Try Poundland, Wilkinsons, eBay, DIY or camping shops.

Q    What about trail hazards – isn’t it dangerous?

A    The leader will ‘call’ any hazards to make followers aware. The call should be passed back down the line so that everyone knows. HEADS!!!

Q    What if I get lost in the woods after dark?

A    You won’t. The leader is familiar with all of the routes, and will wait as necessary. We always ride as a group, formed as tightly as is practical - and stragglers will be waited for at every deviation, or as necessary to keep them in sight. We always wait for punctures and mechanicals.

Q    Will we be going on the road at all?

A    Yes, but only where unavoidable in order to link off-road trails. These are all predominantly off-road rides, so public roads will be avoided as much as possible.

Q    What should I wear?

A    Equip for ‘slightly colder than expected’ in the form of an additional layer worn or carried. Bare legs, arms and hands are not a good idea. If starting in shorts, carry arm and leg warmers.

Q    Will we see any wildlife?

A    Certainly. Rabbits and foxes are very common sights. We’re also likely to see deer, badgers, owls, bats, courting couples with steamed up windows, hedgehogs, rodents, etc.

Q     What’s the ‘hierarchy of lighting’?

A      To avoid distracting shadows, the group should be organised by order of lighting power. The most powerful lights go first. The leader has extremely powerful lights.

Q     What’s so special about riding at night?

A     It’s not like riding in daylight. Familiar trails seem completely different. The senses are heightened, and you need to concentrate more. There’s a tangible sense of isolation. You’ll feel more aware. The riding seems faster, even though speeds are usually a touch lower than when riding in daylight. Somehow it’s all a bit more intense and rewarding. There’s a unique and very special atmosphere to it. Best of all, it’s a thrill and really great fun!
