Fareham Wheelers Cycling Club Mountain Bike Rides

The best fun you’ll ever have on a bike - guaranteed!

Organiser: David Palk

These rides are run at a brisk pace for regular cyclists – but we always wait for stragglers and nobody will be left behind ‘out in the woods’!

Fareham Wheelers Mountain Biking 2010

FWCC MTB activities will be expanded for the new season. The idea is to provide something for all keen off-road riders, rather than just a hard blast in the dark on a Tuesday night – but we’ll still do that as well! Please use the club’s forum to communicate, and watch the notice board for ride details. Do feel free to use the email contacts included below for further info.

FUN/MODERATE RIDES

Thursday Nights at 7 p.m. from outside Whiteley Primary School – April to October

Fun XC MTB rides of around fifteen to twenty miles at a sociable pace. We alternate coastal, rural and woodland routes, with enough variation to avoid regular repetition. These rides are suitable for all except for absolute beginners, and are always a good laugh. Lights are required during spring and autumn, and basic ones are a good idea through the summer in case of hold ups. We’re a very friendly bunch, so everyone will be well looked after. Check the forum and notice board for more details.

SUNDAY RIDES

From various local start points - most weekends throughout the year

A programme of local rides with different leaders. The routes and distances will vary, providing opportunities for a range of abilities and interests. These rides may include routes in the South Downs, Purbecks, Surrey Hills, Bracknell Forest, etc. All rides will be within a 1 ½ hour drive of Fareham, and most much closer to home. Check the forum and notice board for more details.

FAST RIDES

Tuesday Nights at 7 p.m. from the club house in Wallington – all year round

A fast-paced XC MTB ride of more than twenty miles. These ones are not suited to novices, and proper trail lighting is essential. No two rides will ever be the same. The Tuesday rides have been described as the best fun you’ll ever have on two wheels. Email (Dave Palk on tracypalks@tiscali.co.uk) for further details and prior confirmation. Only heavy rain, deep snow or serious illness keeps us in on a Tuesday night!

SHORT/EASY/BEGINNERS RIDES

From Wallington or Whiteley - according to demand

We’re happy to accommodate newbies and the less confident, and will promote a few suitable rides throughout the season. Check the notice board, post up your interest on the forum, or Email Dave Palk on tracypalks@tiscali.co.uk or Pete Gutteridge on pete_35@hotmail.com.

ADVICE, COACHING AND SKILLS SESSIONS

Incorporated into Thursday and Sunday rides – just ask

Our group benefits from some experienced riders, a professional bike expert and a graduate sports scientist who’s also been an international mtb guide. We hope to be able to include an educational element to our activities. Advice is free, and if you simply post your question on the forum there’s always someone who’ll reply with an answer – or just ask during a ride.

TRIPS AND WEEKENDS AWAY

The Big Bike Bash (New Forest), etc.

Watch the notice board and forum for further info.

SOCIAL

The club’s weekly get-together for a chat and a cuppa – and perhaps a pint at the White Horse after

7:30 – 9:30 on a Monday night, upstairs at Wallington Village Hall, Broadcut, Fareham. Why not drop in for a chat? Oh, and there’s also an annual FW mountain bikers’ curry night to look forward to at Christmas.

LADIES

Are always welcome

We’re definitely not a marauding gang of testosterone-fuelled, macho crazies!

N.B. All riders will be expected to wear a helmet. We always stop to help if there’s ever a problem, but you’ll need your own basic provisions – pump, spare tube(s), trail tool, water, etc. All riders take part in FWCC activities at their own risk. Individual third party insurance (via household, CTC, etc.) is advised. Please check the listed distance and pace of rides to suit your ability. And, don’t worry, nobody ever gets left behind out in the woods!
