Fareham Wheelers

Fareham Wheelers caters for all standards of cycling, from beginner to veteran. The club has a friendly atmosphere and is also competitive when it comes to racing and time trials.

Every Sunday morning throughout the year, we meet for the club run. With two groups to choose from you can join in either a leisurely ride or for the more enthusiastic a training ride of between 40-60 miles around the Hampshire countryside, finishing at a tea shop for refreshment.

During the spring and summer season the club holds time trials over various distances and currently has an active road racing team, which is supported by Speltham Contracts. Several members take part in racing at the Goodwood circuit and the Mountbatten Centre track at Portsmouth.

Whether you ride for leisure or sport, cycling is a great way to get fit and stay in shape and a club is the best place to get started, share advice, find out about cycling events and of course, enjoy riding with other keen cyclists. We meet socially on Monday evenings (except Bank Holidays) at Wallington Community Hall, Fareham, 8:00 to 10:00pm. For more details, follow the options under the About Us heading in the menu above.

Recent praise for the FWCC club run: "I have ridden a couple of the Saturday beginner rides. The rides are an enjoyable and welcoming experience which show the club, and cycling, in an excellent light and the guys leading the ride, Nigel, Gavin and Gareth are a real credit. I am well accustomed to the usual club attitude i.e. turn up on the Sunday clubs run, only to be ignored and then dropped, usually miles from home. The approach taken by Fareham Wheelers is completely the opposite of this and I hope it gets you the number of new members you deserve - it certainly convinced me to join!"

Great results for FWCC at Thruxton,  despite the weather....

The weather was windy and wet this Sunday for the South Circuit League event at Thruxton.  Windy and wet had turned to awful by 10.45 when the 4th cat race started ....heavy rain, 30mph winds and cold led the organisers to cut the distances by 2 laps for each race.  FWCC had Andy Page and Dave Dalton  riding in his first ever race, plus a gang of supporters!

The race was 8 laps, the bunch mostly stayed together but the winner (Michael Leech of Team Tor 2000) soloed home. Andy buried himself at the line to gain a closely fought 3rd place. He said he had to change his line in the last 30 metres and may have done better otherwise. Dave was buzzing and enjoyed his first ever race, coming in confidently shortly after, 5 seconds back from the front four riders.  An excellent ride by the guys, especially given the weather.

Neil, Robin and Phil had less rain for the cat 3 race - Phil says... "the wind got evil and with the short distance a number of us went hell for leather at the start. To be honest I was so cold I just wanted to get warm. It was hard driving on at the front but one hell of a workout. Like many, Neil took for the pitlane early, not a bad option, it's a long season. Unfortunately, back in the race, FWCC missed the break which, from the results, turns out to have been missed by everyone?!!  - Of course (as always !!) the break went the only time we were not really in a position to cover and although a few of us tried to get across there was not much organisation in the group.  I knew I had little sprint left in my legs so I offered a lead out to Robin. I must admit it was a great buzz moving through the centre of the bunch and up the outside of the front line to hit the front and get through the chicane first, all the time knowing it's your team mate who is getting a good tow. When Robin sprinted he was way ahead, perhaps I should have carried on going myself but I thought I'd sit up and watch - oh yeah - and more to the point - get some oxygen back into my body!

Thanks to Gareth's support for what was in all a good day for the team despite the poor conditions."

Thanks to Phil and Gareth for the write ups and also to Gareth for the photos..
