Fareham Wheelers

Fareham Wheelers caters for all standards of cycling, from beginner to veteran. The club has a friendly atmosphere and is also competitive when it comes to racing and time trials.

Every Sunday morning throughout the year, we meet for the club run. With two groups to choose from you can join in either a leisurely ride or for the more enthusiastic a training ride of between 40-60 miles around the Hampshire countryside, finishing at a tea shop for refreshment.

During the spring and summer season the club holds time trials over various distances and currently has an active road racing team, which is supported by Speltham Contracts. Several members take part in racing at the Goodwood circuit and the Mountbatten Centre track at Portsmouth.

Whether you ride for leisure or sport, cycling is a great way to get fit and stay in shape and a club is the best place to get started, share advice, find out about cycling events and of course, enjoy riding with other keen cyclists. We meet socially on Monday evenings (except Bank Holidays) at Wallington Community Hall, Fareham, 8:00 to 10:00pm. For more details, follow the options under the About Us heading in the menu above.

Recent praise for the FWCC club run: "I have ridden a couple of the Saturday beginner rides. The rides are an enjoyable and welcoming experience which show the club, and cycling, in an excellent light and the guys leading the ride, Nigel, Gavin and Gareth are a real credit. I am well accustomed to the usual club attitude i.e. turn up on the Sunday clubs run, only to be ignored and then dropped, usually miles from home. The approach taken by Fareham Wheelers is completely the opposite of this and I hope it gets you the number of new members you deserve - it certainly convinced me to join!"

ROAD & ENVIRONMENTAL NIGHTMARE:

Did you know that HCC has a plan to destroy the entire Brownwich and Chilling area (pretty much everything between Abshot, Meon Shore and Solent Breezes) for gravel extraction? Even the sandstone cliffs will go if the looming proposal is successful. This would result in over one million heavy-lorry movements out from Abshot and along Warsash Road. The proposal would completely destroy the biggest block of undeveloped coastal land between Portsmouth and Southampton, which is a valuable wildlife habitat, has SSSI's and is bordered each side by important nature reserves. The land has all kinds of official designations for its landscape beauty, public access, historic importance and wildlife value, but, apparently, these offer no protection against destruction for mineral exploitation. The two farms were actually purchased by HCC in the 'seventies to protect the area from development and provide public access! The plan is to 'restore' to a wetland habitat after extraction of the gravel. This is PR-speak for not restoring at all and simply leaving flooded pits. An undecided element to the proposal is whether or not to use part of the proposed extraction site (probably the northernmost bit near Hook and Abshot) for household waste landfill - meaning even more lorries, unpleasant smells, windblown litter, methane gas, etc.

Do you fancy all of this happening? Every resident in Fareham's Western Wards (is that you?) will be blighted by this for the next twenty years if it goes ahead. See more at www.camelsolent.org.uk. Please email as many protest letters as possible (details of how and to whom on the site) before the deadline, January 15th. There was a public meeting (complete with angry scenes) about it at Brookfield School on Saturday night. There are hidden agendas and other issues that make the rape of Chilling far more likely than one might at first suppose when looking at the initial facts as presented by HCC.

This is a proposed environmental disaster right on our doorsteps, and WILL happen if we don't take a very strong stand against it.
