Fareham Wheelers Cycling Club

founded 1927

Fareham Wheelers

Fareham Wheelers caters for all standards of cycling, from beginner to veteran. The club has a friendly atmosphere and is also competitive when it comes to racing and time trials.

Every Sunday morning throughout the year, we meet for the club run. With two groups to choose from you can join in either a leisurely ride or for the more enthusiastic a training ride of between 40-60 miles around the Hampshire countryside, finishing at a tea shop for refreshment.

During the spring and summer season the club holds time trials over various distances and currently has an active road racing team, which is supported by Speltham Contracts. Several members take part in racing at the Goodwood circuit and the Mountbatten Centre track at Portsmouth.

Whether you ride for leisure or sport, cycling is a great way to get fit and stay in shape and a club is the best place to get started, share advice, find out about cycling events and of course, enjoy riding with other keen cyclists. We meet socially on Monday evenings (except Bank Holidays) at Wallington Community Hall, Fareham, 8:00 to 10:00pm. For more details, follow the options under the About Us heading in the menu above.

Phil and Neil rode in the cat 3/4 Dave Ryan memorial road race this morning, everyone else was far too sensible to trek all the way up to Oxford to ride around in a downpour. From Neil's point of view at least he wasn't out in it long, crashing while going down a hill on the first lap! Neil says "I went cartwheeling so far through a hedge that the paramedic/support cars behind didn't see me and drove straight past! I think I've broken a finger but otherwise I'm just cut to ribbons. Gave the nice ladies at race HQ quite a shock! (Note: the bike is fine so no real damage done!) Phil on the other hand was going great guns, the lack of cooperation in the bunch when it came to break-chasing was frustrating as most guys seemed to want to sit in and wait for the finale: A leg snapping climb that turned off the main loop for the last 400m. It was very steep and a real power finish, Phil rode well saving a bit for the final lunge and finished up around 15th (5 riders clear by 20sec or so, then a procession of 4-5 leading the main body of the bunch home). Great prep' for next weekends Sotonia race was the conclusion in the car home (provided my finger is better!)" Better luck next week Neil! Results are here but Phil seems to be missed off at the moment...

Robin Didymus and Gareth Peters rode in the Team AXIOM Mid-Summer Hill Climb at Ditcham Park School. 2pm start, today. A great new event for the calendar – fantastic venue, excellent organisation and a lovely 2.2 miles of suffering!! (The North hill up to the school is used…..a mix of flat bits, steep bits, very steep hairpin bit and a nice 90 degree turn within 100m of the finish line thrown in at the end!....) Robin placed second (go Robin!) with a time of 8:04, and Gareth managed 9:29. The Winner was the promoting team’s Luke Myers with a 7:30. (He was also fastest to the gatekeeper’s Lodge Prime) There were lots of junior riders taking part and many were presented with prizes from the bottom of the finishing list upwards. Big thanks to Tony, Luke, Sarah and the Axiom for a superb afternoon’s competition! and to Will and his team at Ditcham. This is hopefully going to become an annual event and it would be great to see more FWCC riders supporting next year.

The next two Thursday evening club TT events are for club trophies:

3rd July: 25 mile Hodges Handicap Cup; 17th July: 10 mile Jean Gray Handicap Cup. As club handicapper it would be helpful to Don if those intending to ride could enter in advance. This is to minimise the possibility of overlooking riders who turn up ad lib. The old crystal ball is less reliable than the form book ! ! For those uninitiated with the handicap procedures, it is based on the competitor's form. Having established the fastest man (known as the Scratchman) a time allowance is given to all other riders set against the 'scratchman' depending on their ability. In theory, the most improved rider wins. Let Don know if you intend to ride...

25/06/2008

Dave Dalton and Phil Burton represented FWCC in the 3/4 CAT race at the DHCycles Mountbatten circuits. The strong windy conditions affected the 35 strong race significantly. Much of the race was spent lined out in single file which quickly broke up into a number of small groups, as clinging to the wheel in front became a survival exercise. Phil said it was "One of the hardest I have done and the average speed was over 1 mph slower than the usual. It was good to see a number of Wheelers in the crowd supporting, much appreciated." Dave finished in the group and Phil was rewarded with 3rd for giving it a go early on. - Racking up the points now Phil!  Full Results at BC site when posted.

News from Susan Knight's Susie's Circuits at Thruxton: Dave and Gavin rode well and finished safely in the bunch in a fast sprint in the 4th cat race. Both remarked on the good experience they are gaining from the frequent races. Club Record Broken!!!

At Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 10 mile open TT on the P613, Phil Burton, Geoff Loveman and James Terry all rode personal best times today to break the FWCC record with a team time of 1:02:58. James rode a blistering 21:34, smashing his previous best time by 70 seconds, Geoff knocked 48 seconds off his p.b. with a thundering 20:55 and Phil sheared 62 seconds off his time from ten days ago with an explosive 20:29!!!

The record for a team ten mile TT was previously set in 1994 by Rowan Horner, Russ Lloyd and Ashley Morris, with a combined team time of 1:03:25. After today's ride the team spoke seriously about their achievement: "Yessss! Come on!! Yeeehaaarrrr!!! We love it!!!! Go Team!!!!!" Results here, also, you can check FWCC club records over the years here but right now I'm going to get the beers in.
