Welcome

Fareham Wheelers caters for all standards of cycling, from beginner & youth to veteran. The club has a friendly atmosphere and is also competitive when it comes to racing and time trials. Founded in 1927, the club has a great history which is celebrated in pictures here.

Every Sunday morning throughout the year, we meet for a Club group ride - the “club run”. With three groups to choose from, you can join in either the social/taster group, the intermediate group or the fast group around the Hampshire countryside, finishing at a tea shop for refreshment. Rides vary between 25 to 60 miles, you choose. Read about the club run to find out if it is for you.

During the spring and summer season the club holds time trials over various distances and promotes two road races. FWCC has an active road racing team and provides coaching support for Junior and Youth riders. Several members take part in racing at the Mountbatten Centre track at Portsmouth and at the Thruxton and Goodwood circuits.

Whether you ride for leisure or sport, cycling is a great way to get fit and stay in shape and a club is the best place to get started, share advice, find out about cycling events and of course, enjoy riding with other keen cyclists. We meet socially on Tuesday evenings at Catisfield Memorial Hall, Fareham, 7:30 to 9:30 pm. For more details, follow the options under the About Us heading in the menu above.

We had a field of 40 for Thursday's race on the P829. Given the recent weather we were grateful that the earlier rain and wind had died away and the temp had risen. Dave D of FWCC won it with a time of  23:03 followed by Darryl Rice (SDV) with 23:14 and Nick Andrews (PNE) was 3rd with 23:40. Of course they were on TT bikes. However Henry was 1st on a Road Bike with a time of 24:04 - exactly the same time as the last TT on this course 2 weeks ago. Joe D was the 1st under 18 with a time of 25:05 and the 1st lady was Donna Tew with a time of 31:16. Half the field consisted of Wheelers; a great turnout by all. Results here...

Many thanks to the helpers without whom we have no event. To Andy Healy who did the pushing off, Don Bulman my fellow timekeeper, Gareth and Caitlin Peters who marshalled the end of the loop, Neil Panter who scrutinised the bikes (a new role this; to make sure everyone has a rear light and identify which are TT and Road bikes) and last by no means least, Robin Goodhead for writing down the finishing order. Even he, as tall as he is, could not see severally numbers which were poorly placed. RANT: Please, please check the CTT website for instructions on where to place race numbers and call your number when you cross the finish line.

Don't forget the Youth and Junior evening next Tuesday (28th May 7-9pm). Roller Session - open to all members - from 7-7.45 pm after that from 7.45-9 pm is the Y & J meeting. The focus of the Youth and Junior session for May will be on flexibility and core strength. So as well as rollers and bike, Y & J riders will need to bring trainers and tracksuit, plus mat or towel and if they have one (not compulsory) a Swiss ball. We will be going through some basic core and flexibility exercises, so will be interactive.

Possibly the best night's racing at Mountbatten ever, so far?? Full report on the Forum!

On a fine evening at the track Caitlin Peters took first girl (and incidentally the overall!) in the U12 race and the first girl in the U14 race, with Vaughan Marris coming in first U12 boy followed by Matthew Day. In the U16 / U14 boys race quality teamwork and strength led to Brendan Drewett coming in first, followed by Harvey Morcombe for second, Tim Goodhead coming in slightly further back in the 'remains of the' bunch sprint.

In the 3/4th race Dave Dalton broke away with 2 others towards the end of the race and took the sprint to win the race! Our own Dan Walker led the bunch home for 4th, Pete Day looking to have grabbed 6th and Brendan Drewett, after the Youth racing, looks to have grabbed a top 10 with Rick Garmin coming in a little further back in the bunch.

In the E123 Henry Newbury managed to gain a lap with 4 others with Ashley Morris cooling the bunch's speed behind - he was slightly boxed for the sprint and resided to 5th place with Ash finishing in the bunch.

Teamwork Makes The Dream Work! - Mountbatten 15th of May

A sunny and reasonably warm but breezy evening greeted the riders at the track on Wednesday and as usual racing kicked off with the U12, U10 and U8 youth race - in which were Matthew Day and Vaughan Marris. Both rode well, Matthew holding his own to take 5th and Vaughan just missing out on the last lap to finish 2nd place!

The next race, the U16's and U14's, was arguably the highlight of the evening, and the FWCC youths have recently made a name for themselves for their dedicated teamwork, an attribute brilliantly executed in this weeks race. Racing were Brendan and Harvey (series leaders coming 1st and 2nd last week), Tim, Alex and James. Harvey attacked and was away for the first half of the race, the others each taking it in turn to neutralize attacks and sit on the front to slow the bunch, notably Tim who spent most of his race at the front keeping things in check. Harvey was brought back and Brendan attacked with Talent Team rider Joe Truman, the two stayed ahead and Joe just beat Brendan to the line. Harvey came in next having attacked from the group and the other followed shortly behind - a real display of teamwork that week in week out is leaving the other riders spare - top work and really great to watch! Brendan and Harvey now extend their lead at the top of the series league.

In the senior 3/4th race were Pete Day, Dave Dalton and Dan Walker. Attacks were not numerous and the pace seemed fast in the group. Dan was evident at the front trying to get away a few times, but couldn't break away, the same for both Dave and Pete. With 5 laps to go, everything was together and it was a bunch sprint to the line where a well placed Dan secured a great 3rd place, with Dave coming in 9th for a point, and Pete 19th just a little further back.

In the E123 was Ashley Morris in a field of 14 riders including Team UK Youth rider Gregg Mansell - eventual race winner after he escaped in a group of three. This was a very attacking race, a war of attrition given the small field and the wind. Ash responded well to the moves but missed the break, coming in with a deserved 9th place, so still in the points!

Top work all, a thoroughly good evening, let's hope it's as sunny and dry next week!

Barrington Day sent in this very sad news:

It is with deep regret that I have to report that Cyril Cawte, a Fareham Wheelers honorary member, was out riding with myself in the New Forest on Sunday 5th of May, when he lost control of his bike and crashed. Despite sterling efforts by the paramedics and the air ambulance crew, he did not recover and died where he fell on the edge of Nomansland Village.
Cyril had been a Fareham Wheeler since 1959.
At the end of every race, he would say " That's it, never again", but he was always there to race again the following week.
Our thoughts go to his wife Margaret, his daughter Louise, son Doug and 3 grandchildren.

These words about Cyril are from Don Bulman:

It is with great sadness I report the  death of  Cyril Cawte aged 70. He was out for a ride last Sunday in the New Forest with Barry Day, when he suffered a  seizure. Despite attempts by medical  staff to resuscitate him he passed away without regaining consciousness. Although in recent times he lived in  North Baddesley, with his wife Margaret,  Cyril was a Fareham lad and in 1959 aged 16 years , joined FWCC;  a membership he sustained throughout the years until 2010 when he was awarded Honorary Membership in recognition for his loyal service. In his day he was a useful club time trialist, as well as social rider.

Cyril was always a willing helper in our Road & Trials premier events, and being a master baker would often supplement the refreshment table with a selection of his wonderful cakes.

Our condolences go out to his wife Margaret, daughter Louisa, son Douglas and their respective spouses as well as 3 grandchildren.

Will miss you mate !

Don

Brendan Drewett was flying the Wheelers flag at Herne Hill on Saturday and at Palmer Park (Reading) today.

Saturday was a Rollapaluza Open Meet at Herne Hill in which Brendan entered all U16 events - an 8 Lap scratch, an 8 Lap points & Devil taking a clean sweep over all and first places, In between these races he decided to ride up in the Senior B events a 10 Lap scratch in which he came 8th a Devil which he took a successful win in, & 10th in the 12 Lap points race this unfortunately had a nasty crash of about 4-5 riders with Laura Cheesman of Prestige Velo Club (familiar face in the southern events) being taken to hospital with a severe winding & suspected fractured ribs, adding a lengthy delay to the days proceedings.

The last events of the day showed a tip of the hat to the start of the Giro, being Italian pursuits for both senior & juniors, Brendan was asked to join one of the senior teams and assisted them to a 4th place result.

Today Brendan has been at Palmer Park at their Paris - Bordeaux meet in which he came 1st in the youth Keirin and 2nd in the youth 10 lap scratch. The Paris -Bordeaux event took the form of a 18 lap qualifying race in which the first 8 came off, Brendan came in 2nd in this qualifying event, the remainder of the field raced for another 4 laps to place them. The qualifying 8 then raced for another 30 laps behind their own choice of derny, and eventful race which the derny's and riders lining 4 abreast across the track on occasions eventually ended with Brendan being pipped into fourth place. As cyclists are made of hardy stuff Laura Cheesman raced today as well after being given the ok from hospital.

This report of the Wheelers outing to the IOW Randonee is from Levienne:  The club was very well represented and looked to have the largest presence on the island. We cycled 70 miles in stunning sunshine and celebrated with a fabulous photo of the Socialites en route to Freshwater Bay. As you can see Chris Williams and I have morphed into one Wheeler as he is 6ft 10 and my shrimpy 5ft 2 is below him!! Some of us even clocked up our very first 100 mile rides with the ride to the ferry and back. Henry blasted round at bionic speed with the fast riders and Gareth and Nigel took the youngsters on the shorter route. A fantastic day out was had by all.

A beautiful evening and ideal conditions for the FWCC 15 mile TT on the P823c; Sunny with a temp of 17 deg C and a slight northerly wind. We had 36 starters for our 15 miler on the P823c with a good turnout of FWCC members (15). The overall winner was Andy Langdown (HRC) setting a new course record of 35:27 (well done Andy!), second John Banham (PHCC) with 36:09 and third Andy Smith (Ports-Tri) with 36:47. The first Wheeler was Ashley Morris (aka Morissoni) with 38:56 and he was also winner of the road bike race. First Jun/Yth was Charlie Cresswel-Hogg (PNE) who was also 2nd on a road bike. The first lady was Debbie Hallett (Ports-Tri). Many thanks to the helpers - Don Bulman, Roger's co-timekeeper and Tim Warner our new trainee/apprentice timekeeper! Thanks to Ray Marshman for pushing off and especially for 'crafting' our new 'deluxe' chequered board, Robin Goodhead's invaluable help in calling the numbers at the finish, Ian for marshalling the Hambledon crossroads and of course John and Joan Ellwood for the sign-on and results board.
Don't forget: All riders that they must ensure their number is pinned on as low as possible (there's guidance on the CTT website) and to shout their number at the finish. Without Robin's help, Roger would have not been able to accurately assign times!!!!

Fareham Wheelers is Awarded a Grant From Fareham Borough Council

The club Management Committee are delighted to announce that Fareham Borough Council, through the Community Action Team, have awarded FWCC a grant of £4999.00 to use for the purpose of assisting, primarily, in the support of young cyclists. This award certainly recognises our community involvement and our previous work for young cyclists.

Also it raises the profile of the Club in the eyes of FBC and we can use it effectively to support the good work that is being undertaken in the name of FWCC. I am sure that this makes it much more likely that one or both of the local Councillors, Tiffany Harper and Connie Hockley will visit the Club one Tuesday.

The club is very grateful to our new chairman, Alan Emmott, for his sterling efforts in securing this award. Also we are grateful to FBC for their positive response and to Narinder Bains of the Community Action Team for her help with our submission.
